Introduce Your Tripawd to Home Cooking with Eli’s Turkey Neck Soup

elisoup.jpgHere is a great way to introduce your dog to a home cooked diet, if you haven’t already. My pal Sasha, Lalla’s mom, sent this to me:

This is the recipe for Turkey Neck Soup that my father Eli cooks for Lalla; he thought Jerry might enjoy it too. Lalla’s vet Andre says that Turkey necks are the best food for dogs, and that as far as he’s concerned, Lalla could live off ’em alone – an opinion she definitely shares with him as she is transfixed by the result, and refuses to eat anything else as long as it’s available. Easy for them – they’re into meat. It is also very, very economical.

Ingredients:

  • Large turkey necks, cut into pieces
  • 3 carrots
  • 3 celery sticks or celery root
  • A piece of pumpkin (optional)
  • Parsley

Place turkey necks in large soup pot. Cover with water. Boil for 15-20 minutes. Scrap and discard any froth.  Bring to a boil and simmer on medium for 1 hour. Add pumpkin and parsley and cook for another 2 hours on a low light. When cool, strain soup and store in necks and soup in separate containers. Soup can also be poured over kibble.

  1. What is the main benefit of moving them to this type of diet? Is it a healthier diet for theim? Better for their teeth or something else?

    • Eric, I know it sounds crazy, but there are SO many benefits to eating raw. But I’d say the main one is that it provides a far healthier diet than anything you can get in a dry kibble. Remember, dogs ate raw meaty bones and prey for eons, before the commercial pet food industry came about in the 1950s. Do you know what’s in commercial pet food? Pretty scary stuff. Even the so-called premium foods are filled with things you can’t identify. Would you eat it? If not, why feed it to your dog?

There are so many problems that a raw (or homecooked) diet can eliminate! Allergies, skin problems, bad breath, dull fur, bad teeth, you name it. I had seizures before I started eating a better raw diet. Once my diet improved, my seizures disappeared!

Check out our health tips page for more information, then google “BARF diet” for dogs. Give it a try, you won’t regret it! Thanks for asking.
